Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption (FRUA) is a non-profit, support network for adoptive families with children from the former Soviet Union. FRUA has chapters throughout the U.S. and offers the following services:
- Network of support for adoptive parents
- Cultural and ethnic events
- Newsletter and lecture series
- Forum for advocating adoption from the former Soviet Union
FRUA's focus:
- Social And Cultural Events - Meeting together for picnics, ethnic dinners, and holiday celebrations
- Orphanage Support - Helping the children who are left behind
- Ethnic Resources - Learning more about our children's native countries
- Advocacy And Outreach - Educating others and increasing public awareness
- Lecture Series - Providing speakers on topics of interest, such as parenting, culture, and developmental issues
FRUA also maintains a mailing list of interest to anyone considering adopting a child from the former Soviet Union. It is called A-PARENT-RUSS. Topics that are discussed include, but are not limited to, finding an agency, identifying a child and accepting a referral, Russian cultural differences, adapting a child to a new family and to a new culture, current news about the Russian adoption laws and adoption process, etc., etc. Members of the list benefit greatly from the breadth of experience present, which cover all aspects of the adoption and parenting of these special children.
