The Aga Khan Trust for CultureHumanities Project for Central AsiaThe Aga Khan Trust for Culture Central Asia is going through profound cultural change. New foundations of identity are emerging as the region faces broader political and economic horizons. Central Asians are reaching into their past for inspiration, and seek assistance in drawing upon the rich traditions of their societies to foster tolerance, ethics, and civic virtues. Central Asian governments have also called for support in advancing teacher education and curriculum. In response, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture established the Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP) in 1997 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. AKHP initiates and supports
AKHP in Schools: Promoting Pluralism in the ClassroomAKHP's work in schools aims to strengthen the quality of teaching and
learning in the humanities at primary and secondary level in Tajikistan.
AKHP trains teachers in student-centred teaching methods that foster
creative thinking, problem solving, and cooperative learning in students.
AKHP works closely with the school and district officials in the
implementation of the project, and leads training for them to build their
understanding of child-centred teaching and learning. Educational resource
materials for teaching the humanities will be published. AKHP in Universities: Pioneering Educational InnovationAKHP has developed a broad and interdisciplinary humanities curriculum for Central Asian undergraduate students. Students explore the themes and questions of the three-year curriculum through rational debate, mediation, role-play, teamwork, and individual inquiry.Students studying the AKHP course in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are involved in a variety of outside activities such as student-led projects, internships and conferences. Such activities are a way to extend what students have learned in the classroom and apply AKHP principles to the development of their communities and societies. AKHP is seeking to develop partnerships and to cooperate further with others working in the fields of education, liberal arts and culture, and who either have or wish to develop links in Central Asia. AKHP's future plans include the development of an alumni programme, strengthening Central Asia's cultural heritage, developing partnerships between AKHP students and teachers and their communities. Please note that AKHP is not a grant-giving organization. To find out more about AKHP, please contact:
