Subject: Health and Medical Care In Azerbaijan

We're wondering if anyone connected with your newsgroup would be interested
in issues of health in Azerbaijan. If so, would you kindly pass on this
information for us.

AZERBAIJAN HEALTH INFORMATION
=============================

The Winter issue of our magazine, Azerbaijan International, has just come
off the press. The entire issue (96 pages) is devoted to "Health and
Medical Care in Azerbaijan". There are numerous photos both contemporary
and historical. Most of the health-related articles were written by the
directors of the Hospitals, Centers and Institutes in Azerbaijan. This kind
of information is extremely rare in the West; virtually nothing has been
published in English to date about the current situation in Azerbaijan as
it relates to health.

Included:

* Empty Maternity Hospitals: Traditional Azerbaijan Birth
     Practices-Dr.Tamilla Dilbazi
* Crisis of Beta Thalassemia-Dr. Azer Karimov & Dr. Chingiz
     Asadov of the Hemtaology Center
* Health Challenges During Transition: The Work of WHO-
     Dr. V. Verbitski
* Return of Infectious Diseases-Dr. Irada Yusifli, Central Hospital, Baku
* Azerbaijan Medical University-Dr. Ahliman Amiraslanov, Rector
* Infants at Risk, Society at Risk: UNICEF Project in Guba-Dr. Roberto Laurenti
* Naftalan: Oil that Heals-Dr. D. Huseinov and Dr. A. Rustamov
* Dreaded "C-Word": Cancer (Attitudes)-Dr. Jamil Aliyev, Director of
    the Oncology Center
* Health Advice to Foreigners Coming to Azerbaijan
* UNHCR's Sheep Project-Economic Basis for Women Refugees-Kaiser Zaman
* Baku's Recent Metro Accident (photos that have never been published before)
* Historical Overview with archival photos from early 20s-Dr. N. Efendiyev
* Iridology-Chelsea Summers
* How to Treat the Common Cold-Azeri Style-Chris Cannon
* Telemedicine: View to the Future-Betty Blair
* Editorial dealing with contemporary Medical Situation and need for Strategy
* Historical Biographies about Dr. Mustafa Topchibashev (developed analgesia
in 1938 and was deeply involved as surgeon during WWII), by Dr. Gariman
Garimanov, and of Dr. Yelsey Guindes (who was very active in
pediatrics early this century), by Fuad Akhundov.

Not related to medicine, but of critical interest to anyone interested in
the region is an interview about Azerbaijan and geopolitics between
Azerbaijan International's editor, Betty Blair and Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski
(Head of Security Council under Carter) who was in Baku in October. There
is also a major interview with US Ambassador Richard Kauzlarich.

Published in California. Goal: Committed to the discussion of issues
related to Azerbaijanis around the world.
