BALYKCHI CITY, KYRGYZSTAN RECEIVES EURASIA FOUNDATION GRANT #1000
March 7, 1996

The Eurasia Foundation is pleased to announce that the
Department of Education of Balykchi City, Kyrgyzstan, is the
1000th recipient of a Eurasia Foundation grant in the former
Soviet Union. Balykchi is a midsized industrial community
located on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, high in the Kyrgyz Tien
Shan Mountains.

To assist with the high unemployment rate of the city's youth,
the Department of Education of Balykchi City has developed a
seven month business training and internship program to involve
50 students. With co-support of the city government, local
businesses and student tuition fees, the program has received a
Eurasia Foundation grant of $12,735 to be used to support
administrative costs, a xerox machine and a new printer. This
grant represents the first international support to grassroots
training initiatives in Balykchi. The Eurasia Foundation is
proud to support the innovative work of individuals and
organizations applying local solutions to local problems.

The Eurasia Foundation is a privately managed grantmaking
foundation supporting democratic institutions and market
development in the twelve countries of the former Soviet Union.
The Foundation expects to make approximately 700 grants this year
through it's offices in Moscow, Saratov, Vladivostok, Kiev,
Yerevan, Tbilisi, Tashkent, and Washington, DC. The Eurasia
Foundation receives principal support from the United States
Agency for International Development.
