SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL AWARDS EIGHT GRANTS
FOR RUSSIAN-AMERICAN NEWSPAPER PARTNERSHIPS
Program To Sponsor Additional Partnerships in Upcoming Months
SCI is pleased to announce the first eight recipients of the Sister
Cities International (SCI) Russian-American Partnerships for Independent
Newspapers (PIN) program. This competitive grant program is designed to
create long-term newspaper partnerships within the framework of US-Russian
sister cities.
These newspaper partnerships will provide Russian independent newspapers
with exposure to and training in the business, financial, and production
management methods of their US counterparts. In addition, they will create
for the American newspapers a ready-made mechanism and financing to
acquaint them with the Russian news media at a critical time in its
development. Throughout the life of the program, from December, 1995 to
December, 1997, there will be a series of management exchanges, US
internships, on and off-site training programs and, where appropriate,
partnership-specific joint activities.
The following partners have been awarded initial PIN grants and will
begin program activies within the next few months:
- The Mercury News of San Jose, California and Uralsky Robochy
of Yekaterinburg;
- The Anacortes American of Anacortes, Washington and Kirishchiy
Fakel in conjunction with the city of Lomonosov;

Asheville, North Carolina and Ekran - Vestnik of Kavkaza Vladikavkaz;

Program (MDP), a project funded by the US Agency for International
Development (USAID). MDP is administered by Internews Network and the
Russian-American Press and Information Center (RAPIC), a project of the
Center for War, Peace, and the News Media of New York University.
