Subject: Refugee Voices
On October 16, 1996, Refugee Voices will present a concert and
dessert reception featuring a string quartet of female musicians, all
refugees from the former Soviet Union. These women are all
master's level, conservatory trained musicians with extensive
experience in various orchestras and musical groups within the
FSU. The concert will be held at the National Museum for Women
in the Arts in Washington, DC.
Refugee Voices is a U.S.-based nonprofit humanitarian
organization that promotes public understanding of refugees in the
United States and facilitates the ability of citizens to get involved
with refugees settling within their own communities.
Refugee Voices airs public service announcements and 3 to 4-
minute mini-shows on over 550 radio stations nationwide. Each
announcement ends with an 800 number that helps individuals
access our database of refugee-assisting agencies throughout the
country and that can help people find the outstanding needs within
their communities.
This first concert and future ones that are being planned are a
specific attempt to raise the awareness and consciousness of
citizens to the positive value of refugee resettlement within the
United States. Also, by presenting women in the National Museum
for Women, we hope to emphasize the fact that the vast majority
of the world's population of refugees are women and children,
over 80%. Not one of them ever decided to become a "refugee."
