Choice of the Regions
"Choice of the Regions" is a new, weekly electronic bulletin which reports
on regional (i.e., not Moscow-based) media coverage of the June
presidential elections in Russia. With it's focus on the relationship
between the print media and the powers-that-be in regional government,
"Choice of the Regions" offers a perspective on the elections that is not
often found in most election coverage. Regional correspondents report on
such issues as which newspapers receive funding from local government and
which newspapers have run afoul of local authorities for favorable
reporting of certain candidates. They also report on local election
polls.
"Choice of the Regions," which is available in Russian or English, is
published by the Russian-American Press and Information Center (RAPIC)
with a grant from the Know-How Fund of the British government. It carries
reports from correspondents in Bryansk, Voronezh, Sergiyev Prosad,
Novosibirsk, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg, Tatarstan and Tyumen.
In addition to the regular regional media reports, each issue also
includes three or four feature articles. The first edition, published May
6, included:
* a "Dear Colleague" letter to Russian journalists from Igor Klyamkin,
chief of the Analytical Center of the Public Opinion Foundation;
* an in-depth look at the relationship between the media and local
authorities in the Kemerovo region; and
* a review of Western media coverage of the presidential elections by
Brian McNair of the Sterling Media Research Institute.
"Choice of the Regions" is available free via e-mail. The first edition
was 50 kilobytes. To be added to the electronic distribution list send an
e-mail message with your name, organizational affiliation, e-mail address,
telephone or fax number, and whether you want the English or Russian
edition to: [email protected] or or [email protected].
