Subject: The European Roma Rights Center
The Roma (Gypsies) remain to date the most deprived ethnic group of
Europe. Almost everywhere, their fundamental civil rights are
threatened. Disturbing cases of racist violence targeting Roma have
occured in recent years. Discrimination against Roma in employment,
education, health care, administrative and other services is common
in many societies. Hate speech against Roma deepens the negative
stereotypes which pervade European public opinion. The European Roma
Rights Center is an international initiative for monitoring the human
rights situation of Roma and providing legal defense in cases of
human rights abuse.
STATUS OF THE ERRC:
The ERRC is an autonomous international non-governmental
organization governed by a board of directors. Romani organizations
and Romani individuals throughout Europe donate time, expertise, and
money to the ERRC. Roma are not just passive beneficiaries of the
work of the ERRC, but indispensable donors as well.
OBJECTIVES:
The ERRC is a public interest law organization which defends the
human rights of Roma. Its purpose is to advocate for the transnational,
geographically diverse Romani community and be a legal resource for
Romani rights. The ERRC works to give Roma tools to combat
discrimination and win equal access to government, education,
employment, health care, housing, and public services.
The ERRC pursues its objectives by engaging in:
-Research: monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation of
the Roma.
-Legal defense: providing and supporting legal services, including
litigation, to Romani victims of human rights violations.
-Romani rights education: supporting the formation of Romani rights
advocates and educating specific target groups about Romani
human rights problems.
-Advocacy: promoting Romani rights in domestic and international
governmental and non-governmental settings.
-Documentation: creating a Romani rights archive and publishing
reports and other materials concerning Romani rights.
