Civil Society: USA
A Select Introduction to 53 Organizations Representing
Civic Initiative in American Society
1996 Edition
Seattle, Washington -- Center for Civil Society
International announces the publication of a new
resource designed to illustrate the importance of the
voluntary sector to a democratic and pluralist
society.
The 1996 edition of "Civil Society: USA" is a
revised version of an earlier volume first published
in 1992. "Civil Society: USA" demonstrates the
diversity and function of the third sector in the
United States by profiling fifty-three nonprofit
American organizations in detail.
"Civil Society: USAs" introduction opens with a
reminder from Alexis de Tocqueville about the
significance to a strong democracy of widespread
citizen participation in nongovernmental entities.
The introduction also clarifies the fundamental
distinctions among nonprofit organizations and
provides statistics on the third sector which put the
importance of associational activity in the U.S. into
perspective.
The eighty-eight page guide provides descriptions of
current programs and publications, historical
background, and contact information for the profiled
organizations. Information concerning budgets and
memberships, as well as international affiliates, is
also supplied for many of the organizations described.
Among the organizations to be found in "Civil Society:
USA" are the Brookings Institution, the National
Charities Information Bureau, the American Civil
Liberties Union, the Nature Conservancy, the Braille
Institute, the Center for Science in the Public
Interest, and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
"Civil Society: USA" is available immediately from
the Center for Civil Society International.
Individuals interested in purchasing single copies
should send checks made out to "CCSI" for $15.00.

CCSI works to strengthen the role of voluntary
organizations and independent groups and associations
in the nations of the former Soviet bloc. It collects

and helps broker connections and joint projects
between them and comparable groups in the U.S.
