INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM OFFICER
Heartland International, a women-managed, nonprofit organization based in
Chicago, is seeking a program officer for an international training
project focusing on Russian and Ukrainian entrepreneurs, legal
professionals and government officials.
The Project: Heartland International, in cooperation with the Office for
Democracy Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is
implementing phase II of an international training program, entitled
Community Connections. This project, funded in part by the U.S.
Information Agency, seeks to provide Russian and Ukrainian entrepreneurs,
legal professionals and government officials with the tools necessary to
strengthen emerging democratic institutions and free market economies.
Beginning this fall, participants from Lviv, Ukraine and Kaluga
and Rostov on Don, Russia will participate in hands-on learning
experiences with Chicago-area businesses and organizations that have been
carefully selected to match the needs and experience of each participant.
Once a week, each participant will attend a session of the Professional
Training Program designed to provide a greater insight and understanding
of a free market economy, fundamental democratic principles, civic
education, business ethics and entrepreneurship in a democratic society.
In addition, participants will make relevant site visits and attend
cultural and social events designed to enhance their American experience.
Russian and Ukrainian participants will stay with local homestay hosts
throughout the program period.
The Position: The primary duties of the program officer include
developing briefing books for each participant, for the homestay hosts and
for the professional placement sponsors; identifying appropriate
professional placements and homestay hosts for the participants;
coordinating weekly Professional Training Seminars; maintaining financial
records; and working with cooperating organizations to enhance the program.
Qualifications:
* an understanding of current international issues, particularly as
they relate to Russia, Ukraine and the NIS;
* excellent communications skills and an ability to relate well with a
variety of people;
* a keen sense of humor;
* willingness to work as a team member;
* a liberal education;
* an understanding of the relationship between a free society and a
free market economy.
