I have recently received the Kovalevskaia Fund Newsletter. In-
cluded in the newsletter was a brief statement of the Fund's
purpose. Perhaps some list members will be interested in con-
tacting the Director of the Fund. I have presented the statement
essentially as it was received.

The Kovalevskaia Fund is a small foundation which aims to encour-
age women in science and technology in developing countries
through appropriate forms of support. We hope to increase the
contact and cooperation between women in science in different
countries, and also stimulate the scholarly study of connections
between the status of women and scientific-technological develop-
ment. The Fund is named after the Russian mathematician, social-
ist and feminist Sofia V. Kovalevskaia (1850-1891).
