DISTANT HEURISTIC OLYMPIAD

Dear friend!
You have a splendid opportunity to show your great talents. We invite you to
take part in Distant Heuristic Olympiad for students of different schools,
cities and countries via E-mail.
If you are aged 6-9 you will have to solve tasks from the first aged group.
We think can help you to type your answers on computer. If you are aged 10-13
you will have to solve problems from the second aged group. We hope you can
type your answers on your own.
There are 7 tasks-nominations in this Olympiad. You can carry out any number
of them you like. The winners will be estimated both in every separate
nomination and in all of them taken together.

Tasks for children aged 6-9 (1-4 grades)
1. Nomination "KNOW YOURSELF"
Our life is full of unexpected things. Imagine you've come across an alien from
another planet. Tell him who you are. Write your story down.
2. Nomination "PHENOMENON"
You are sure to be an observant and inquisitive person. Try to remember and
explain the most extraordinary event in your life.
3. Nomination "SIGN"
There are a lot of miracles in the world of numbers. What do you think this
note means:
1+1=1 ?
4. Nomination "SYMBOL"
Think of symbol of a feeling of surprise and type it on computer in DOS using
the keyboard letters and signs.
5. Nomination "RESEARCH"
Now you are going to do the most captivating task. Take a clean sheet of paper
and try to investigate it using only your organs of sense (eyes, nose, hands,
ears, etc.). Put down the results.
6. Nomination "COMPOSITION"
Can you feel the way other things live? Imagine you are a mountain. Write your
story on behalf of this mountain.
7. Nomination "FUTURE"
People who can foresee future are called foretellers. Try to become this person.
Write about 3 main deeds which people are sure to make in 21 century.

Tasks for children aged 10-13 ( 5-7 grades )
1. Nomination "KNOW YOURSELF"
There is inscription on the ancient Greek temple in Delphi: "Know oneself".
What do you think these words mean?
2. Nomination "PHENOMENON"
Sometimes you have a feeling that the event going in the present has already
happened to you some day. Can you explain this strange phenomenon?
3. Nomination "SIGN"
Almost everything in the world can be ciphered in signs. What do you think
this sign could mean:

Now you've got a kind of philosophy task. Think of your own symbol of our world
and make it on computer in DOS using the keyboard letters and signs.
5. Nomination "RESEARCH"
Have you ever worked as a true scientist? Then make an investigation of
some pure water using all the scientific methods you know. Put down you
results.
6. Nomination "COMPOSITION"
Imagine you are an author of the History textbook. Describe one of your
life events which could be included in this textbook.
7. Nomination "FUTURE"

person. Write about 3 main deeds which people are sure to make in 21 century.

Directions on Olympiad carrying
1. The participants can be both individuals and organized school or club
groups of students (no more than 10 students in every age group).
2. All the tasks should be accomplished within 2 hours with breaks to rest.
The start and the end of the competitions is defined by coordinator with the
regard of local conditions.
3. The participants should carry out the tasks on personal computers. They
should type their answers. If there aren't enough computers for each person
the participants may write their answers on sheets of paper and then
type them in turn. The adults can help children to type their answers without
changing them.
4. This Olympiad is a non-commercial one so all the expenses for the local
organization of competitions including awards to the winners should be taken
by schools and coordinators/
5. Registration of the participants works is as following:
- Student's Name (Surname)
- A boy or a girl
- Date of Birth
- School, City, Country
- E-mail
The answers to nominations are typed in English. You are not obliged to copy
out the task itself.
6. Please send Name, E-mail and Phone of local coordinator (teacher) if you
are an organized group.
7. All the students works should be sent no later than February 21, 1997
in one or several letters to the Olympiad committee via E-mail:

The Judges will estimate creative works taking into account the following
criteria: heuristic features, uncommonness, imagination, fantasy, sense
vision etc. Together with the winners' works the Olympiad results are
sent to all the participants.
