PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRAM
GOVERNANCE AND CIVIL SOCIETY
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Foundation is recruiting a Program Officer to
join the Governance and Civil Society (GCS) unit to be responsible for
refining and overseeing the Foundation's grantmaking in Eastern Europe,
focusing principally in Poland and Slovakia, as well as for regional
programs that continue to include Hungary and the Czech Republic. The
new Program Officer, working closely with other New York staff, will
conduct a review of the current program -- its priorities and geographic
focus; recommend and refine future directions and funding strategies;
identify prospective grantees; lead grant discussions and prepare grant
recommendations; and monitor and evaluate program activities.
Responsibilities will also include liaison with other donors,
government agencies and non-governmental organizations and partner
institutions in Eastern Europe, as well as communicating broadly the
results of Foundation-supported programs.
Current programmatic priorities for Eastern Europe include: strengthening
human rights protection, promoting the reform of legal institutions, and
developing public interest law; strengthening institutions of governance
at national and local levels; building independent public policy analysis
capacity; strengthening the nonprofit sector and local philanthropic
institutions; and enhancing the status of women. The Program Officer
will work with colleagues in New York on a new initiative to build
community-based economic development institutions and innovative
approaches to poverty alleviation and to strengthen the social sciences
in Eastern Europe. In addition, the Foundation has a field office in
Moscow, responsible for grantmaking in Russia. The Eastern Europe and
Russia program staff work together on regional initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree in social sciences, law, or public
policy; demonstrated experience in relevant program areas; strong
analytical and communication and writing skills; strong inter-personal
skills and collegial approach to work. Work experience in national or
international non-profit sector; knowledge of public interest law field;
substantive knowledge of Eastern Europe and familiarity with its policy,
advocacy and research institutions; fluency in language(s) of Eastern
and/or Central Europe.
Full Salary Range: $61,300 - $110,300
