Biointensive for Russia
Biointensive for Russia (BfR) is a four year-old project to
promote biointensive sustainable mini-farming in Russia. BfR
organizes workshops and exchanges, and publishes books. In 1993,
with the assistance of the Peace Corps and the American
organization Ecology Action, BfR translated into Russian and
printed 50,000 copies of a book titled "How to Grow More
Vegetables."
BfR promotes a small-scale, low-input, organic farming approach
that works with the natural systems of
the earth to produce large amounts of calories from vegetable as
well as grain crops grown in small areas. Properly practiced, it
results in important reductions in energy and water expenditures
and reduces pressures to cut down forests. BfR targets its
outreach programs to dacha gardeners and mini-farmers to help them
provide their families and friends with more nutritious foods.
The program was developed and tested around the world over the
last 24 years by Ecology Action, a non-profit based in Willits,
California.
BfR is helping a Russian organization, Ecodom, to organize a
biointensive, mini-farming workshop in Akademgorodok, near
Novosibirsk in Siberia, August 18-20. BfR and Ecodom hope to
organize four more workshops in western Russia and Georgia later
this year.
Ecodom was founded by Russian architects, engineers, and
scientists to build self-sufficient single-family dwellings that
have "minimum impact on the local environment. On July 11 BfR is
hosting a reception for Ecodom's educational director Larissa
Avrorina in Palo Alto. If you are interested in attending,
