                         Warsaw, Poland
*****************************************************************
Host Universities: Warsaw University of Technology
                   Warsaw University
                   Warsaw School of Economics
-----------------------------------------------------------------
AUDEM is a consortium of institutions of higher learning formed
to enhance the role of education in promoting democratic institu-
tions, economic development, and common moral and social values.
There are more than 100 university members in the Alliance, 70%
from 12 Central and Eastern European countries and 30% from West
Europe and the United States.

The Eighth Annual Conference will be held Sunday through Wednes-
day lunch, November 2-5, 1997. The Opening Session will be in the
Aula of The Technical University of Warsaw. All other sessions
will be at the conference hotel, Hotel Park, in downtown Warsaw.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
TWO MAJOR CONFERENCE THEMES:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT. Invited and contributed papers will be
presented on human values; the roles of universities in communi-
ties, regions and nations; organizational effectiveness; restruc-
turing of higher education, including papers on assessment and
accreditation; information access and technology; and innovations
in curricula and programs.

CIVIC NETWORKING. Such networks are beginning to appear and are
useful in bringing non-governmental organizations, universities,
and government agencies into closer cooperation. They typically
rely heavily on universities and community libraries. These
networks are also proving to be valuable in providing access to
information and the Internet to people otherwise unable to use
these technologies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Conference will offer approximately 20 sessions (plenary and
concurrent) organized in three broad tracks elaborating the above
themes and the development of our democracies, economies, and
cultures and the interaction with institutions of higher educa-
tion:

A. University and Society--sessions dealing with values and
motivations in democracies and university-community outreach.
B. Infrastructural Reform--sessions dealing with legal and finan-
cial reform, higher education restructure, assessment and
   accreditation, information technology, improving organization-
   al effectiveness, distance education.
C. Curriculum Reform--for example: business ethics, quality
control in engineering education, environmental management,
public health and medicine, journalism and mass media, and
   philosophy education.
