INTERNET FELLOWSHIP IN AZERBAIJAN:
U.S. - AZERBAIJAN INTERNET ACCESS AND TRAINING PROGRAM
Application Due Date: October 10, 1997
Fellowship Start Date: October or November, 1997
The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) is pleased to re-open
the call for applications from U.S. citizens who are interested in
applying for year-long fellowship in Baku, Azerbaijan to promote
Internet access and training, Web site development, electronic
publishing, and distance education projects at universities, libraries,
and NGOs through the U.S. - Azerbaijan Internet Access and Training
Program (IATP).
The IATP, a program of the United States Information Agency (USIA), is
designed to provide sustainable access to and training in e-mail,
Internet, and the World Wide Web for alumni of USIA and other U.S.
government-sponsored exchange and training programs and their colleagues
in Azerbaijan for the purpose of promoting educational and
professional exchange. USIA academic exchange programs with
Azerbaijan include, but are not limited to, the Fulbright Program,
Regional Scholar Exchange Program/Freedom Support Act Fellowships in
Contemporary Issues, Edmund S. Muskie Fellowship Program/FSA Graduate
Program, and 1000/1000 Program, FSA Undergraduate Program, and FSA
Secondary School Program.
The U.S. - Azerbaijan Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) is
sponsored by the United States Information Agency with funds allocated
by the Congress of the United States. The program is administered
through a three-year grant awarded to IREX.
USIA, IREX, and other public and private sector organizations launched
the IATP in December 1995. To date, the IATP has established Internet
access sites at more than 35 universities and libraries in the Russian
Federation, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, provided
training and support to hundreds of organizations, and brought
thousands of users on-line. The IATP has provided free e-mail accounts
to alumni of USIA-sponsored programs at public access Internet sites,
created home pages at universities, supported online publications, and
established the Uzbekistan FreeNet and Internet Consortium.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 10, 1997
IREX will begin to review applications immediately upon receipt and
contact promising applicants for preliminary telephone interviews. IREX
expects the IATP fellowship to begin in Azerbaijan in late October or
November, 1997.
