Subject: IREX Policy Forum
The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), presents a
Policy Forum on:
"Heeding the Call: Efforts in Curricular and Governance Reform in
Russian Education"
Thursday, November 6, 1997
9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
in Washington, DC
Russia's higher education system has had a difficult time adapting
to the new economic and political reality transforming the nation.
Although reform efforts are underway, current problems include
outdated curricula, poor teacher training, management difficulties,
impediments to university autonomy, and a shortage of financing for
education. IREX will assemble specialists in the field of higher
education reform to discuss issues of educational reform and assess
the efforts US scholars, policy makers, funding organizations, and
NGOs are making to address these challenges.
The forum will feature panel presentations and roundtable discussions
with some of the most prominent US scholars of Russian education
reform, and will also feature Iouri Konoplev, Rector of Kazan State
University, Evgenii Kniazev, Head of the International Office at
Kazan State, and Alexander Kornilov and Mikhail Rykhtik of Nizhnii
Novgorod State University, Russia to present case studies and
first-hand experience of educational challenges and reform efforts in
Russia.
