                SPRING 1998 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

                    U.S.-UKRAINE FOUNDATION

The U.S.-Ukraine Foundation is a not-for-profit non-governmental
organization established in 1991 to facilitate democratic development and
encourage free market reform in Ukraine. In pursuing its mission, the
Foundation was one of the first non-profit organizations to establish a
permanent presence in Ukraine when it established the Pylyp Orlyk
Institute for Democracy (POID) in Kyiv. POID is a non-partisan public
policy research institute, providing information to Ukrainian
policymakers, NGOs, academia and the media on issues pertaining to the
development of civil society.

The Foundation recently launched the U.S.-Ukraine Community Partnerships
for Local Government Training and Education Project (CPP). CPP is a
three-year USAID-funded program which will link 18 U.S. communities with
18 Ukrainian communities to establish education and training programs in
public administration for local governments in Ukraine. The partnerships
will focus on issues related to budgeting, housing, transportation,
economic development and citizen participation.

Other Foundation programs include:

The Parliamentary Development Project (PDP), a recently extended
USAID-funded project aiming to create a research analytical capacity for
the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament). PDP focuses on issues
pertaining to legislative-executive relations, legislative processes, and
transparency and committee structure at both the Verkhovna Rada and local
government levels;

The Constitutional Court Project which strives to help spread awareness
and understanding of the new Constitution of Ukraine and the
Constitutional Court among all segments of the Ukrainian population;

The publication West: Window on Ukraine - a biweekly newsletter
distributed to over 1500 policy makers in Ukraine to give them feedback
on how events in Ukraine are received in D.C. and the U.S.; and

 The Biblioteka Resource Center located at POID which houses over 1500
volumes on public policy, democratic governance, administration and
market economics.

The Foundation seeks interns to:
� cover Congressional testimony and hearings on Capitol Hill;
� track U.S. government statements and analyses of current political
events in Washington
� compile reports and synopses;
� assist in grant research and Foundation development initatives;
� respond to research questions from Ukraine;
� support public relations activities by writing press releases and news
stories;
� assist in database management;
� aid in the development and updating of the Foundation WWW page; and
� provide general office support.

Undergraduate or graduate students in political science, public
administration, history, international or East European studies or
related fields are encouraged to apply. The Foundation may be able to
accommodate project-specific internships for graduate students depending
on the topic area. Candidates should have strong oral and written
communication skills. These are non-paid internships.
