GRANT OPPORTUNITY- Soros Documentary Fund for Film Production
[NOTE: For more information, contact the individuals at the Soros
Foundation mentioned at the bottom of this announcement]
The Soros Documentary Fund supports international documentary films and
videos on current and significant issues in human rights, freedom of
expression, social justice, and civil liberties. Priority is given to
projects addressing contemporary issues.
Eligibility Requirements
Documentaries may be film or video projects. Individuals from around the
world may apply. If applicants have a 501(c)(3) nonprofit fiscal sponsor, a
current tax certification letter must be provided. Applicants must have
creative and budgetary control over the proposed documentary. Please be
aware the Soros Documentary Fund is highly competitive. Only a fraction of
submitted proposals will be funded.
Three distinct project categories will be considered for funding:
Initial seed funds
Projects in preproduction
Projects in production or postproduction
Funding requests must be submitted to the Open Society Institute's Soros
Documentary Fund with all required information and work samples.
SEED FUNDS
Applicants seeking seed funds must have completed no more than two films or
videos, not including student projects. These funds are for developing
projects in the research or preproduction phase. Grants for this category
range up to $15,000. Grantees receiving seed funds may reapply for
additional support at the production or postproduction project stage. The
new application must be accompanied by a work in progress sample tape and a
comprehensive project update.
Checklist of required information and materials
A treatment or project synopsis in English, including a statement of
objective; narrative summary; status of the project; list of primary
personnel, director's filmography; and a comprehensive
distribution/marketing strategy.
A one page summary outline in English of the information requested above.
A comprehensive project budget in USD, including amount secured to date and
a complete list of funding sources.
A completed prior work of the director of the proposed documentary on VHS
(NTSC, PAL, or SECAM). If no film or video sample is available, a creative
work indicating an artistic point of view and the ability to tell a story
using a visual medium is required.
PROJECTS IN PREPRODUCTION
Preproduction funds are available to projects in preparation for
production. Applicants are required to submit a completed prior work of the
director, preferably a documentary. The maximum grant in this category is
$25,000. Applicants awarded preproduction grants may not reapply for funds
under the work in progress category.
All information and materials requested under the seed fund category are
also required for a preproduction project. See above checklist.
PROJECTS IN PRODUCTION OR POSTPRODUCTION
Works in progress include projects in production or postproduction. The
maximum grant in this category is $50,000 but will average $25,000.
Applicants are required to submit rushes, rough cut, or fine cut of the
work in progress.
All information and materials requested under the seed and preproduction
categories are also required for a work in progress. See above checklist.
Work Samples
Please label all work samples with the name of the project, director,
producer, and total running time. Work samples will be returned, but we are
not responsible for lost or damaged materials.
Review Process
All grant proposals will initially be reviewed by the Open Society
Institute-New York Arts and Culture Regional Program. Documentary film and
video projects accepted for final review will be submitted to the Soros
Documentary Fund Advisory Board for grantmaking recommendations. The Board
will meet quarterly. There are no application deadlines. If your project is
accepted for Board review, you will receive a final grant determination
within three to six months of submission of all required materials.
Proposal Submissions
Proposals should be sent to the attention of Diane Weyermann, Director of
the Arts and Culture Regional Program, Open Society Institute, 400 West
59th Street, New York, New York 10019, USA. You will receive a letter from
OSI within two weeks confirming receipt of your application materials and
requesting additional information if needed.
