Women's Support Center
The Women's Support Center was established in February 1996 by a group of
women, who have work-experience in different higher educational
institutions and organizations related to women issues, with the aim "to
help women in rural areas adapt to the new market economy relations on an
equal basis with men and to enhance their contribution to the economic
reforms and the building of a civilized democratic society." The Center
works to promote women's entrepreneurship, to provide women with
information and legal consultations, to improve their employment
opportunities, and to encourage their self-employment. It is headquartered
in Bishkek and has branches in Naryn and Talas oblasts.
In its first two years of operation, the Center has:
* Organized 32 rural women community groups which encompass 350 women
* Created more than 100 self-employment opportunities for women;
* Opened an Educating Computer Center in Talas oblast;
* Published and distributed books in Kyrgyz and Russian on women's
rights and health care for pregnant women; and
* Organized seminars on women's rights.
The Center hopes to establish an independent bank which will provide
low-interest, small loans to enable women in rural areas to establish their
own small businesses. Members of the Women's Support Center include Chingiz
Aitmatov, Kyrgyzstan's best-known writer.
