Subject: Request for materials

Dear Colleagues,

The Innovation and Development Centre (Kyiv) has begun work in support of
charities and philanthropic activity in Ukraine. The Centre's mandate is
to assist Ukrainian charitable groups in meeting international standards
of management, transparency, marketing and good governance. In addition,
the Centre will assist in matching potential donors with recipient
organisations and will conduct training and research so as to enhance the
effectiveness of charitable activities across the country.

The Centre's mandate includes the establishment of a library dealing
exclusively with philanthropy and charitable activities; the resources of
the library will be available to all groups and organisations interested in
international and national experience in this field.

Our request is for the donation of publications in your listings which deal
with charity or philanthropy and corporate giving issues, including legal
aspects. The Centre would particularly appreciate any publications dealing
with the organization, management and governance of small, not-for-profit
groups, with ethical and transparency issues, with empirical studies of
charitable activities, and with issues relating to the training of
volunteers, corporate giving etc. The Centre, in consultation with its
international donor partners, has identified these areas of concentration
to be of critical importance given the deficit of relevant literature
available in this country.

It is currently impossible, in terms of Ukrainian accounting and banking
rules, for charitable organisations to purchase such materials by
transferring funds abroad. While the Innovation and Development Centre is
similarly constrained, the Centre provides a service for nonprofit
charitable organisations which makes scarce reference resources more
widely available. For example, the Centre has received support from the
Support Center for Nonprofit Management (San Francisco, USA), National
Center for Nonprofit Boards (Washington, USA), The Peter F. Ducker
Foundation for Nonprofit Management (New York, USA), Case Study Center,
John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (Cambridge),
Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Washington, USA),
Association of Charitable Foundations (London, USA), Voluntary Action
Program, Canadian Heritage (Ottawa, Canada), United Way of Canada (Ottawa,
Canada), Community Foundation (Ottawa, Canada), Canadian Cente for
Philanthropy (Toronto, Canada), IEG, Inc. (Chicago, USA), International
Fund Raising Group (London, United Kingdom), Charities Aid Foundation,
Russian office (Moscow, Russia), among others. The Centre is also able to
publicise new materials in its news-magazine Crossroads which is widely
distributed among nonprofit organisations, donor organisations and
government ministries in Ukraine.

Your donation of the publications, which would be used in the Centre's
reference service for charity organisations, would be greatly appreciated.
Any such donation will be acknowledged in IDC publications unless you
advise the Centre to the contrary. We hope that the present accounting
environment will be changed in the very near future so that Ukrainian
organisations can transact their own business in a normal manner.

Please accept our thanks and appreciation for your generous support. We
look forward to increased cooperation in the future and we will keep you
informed as to our activities in the field of charity and philanthropy in
Ukraine.
