Ecoil-Ruzgar
Azerbaijan Environmental NGO
Ecoil-Ruzgar is a non-governmental, ecological association that was
founded in February 1998 in Baku when two organizations, Ruzgar and Ecoil
joined. The association is composed of scientists, engineers, doctors,
sociologists, lawyers, economists and journalists, working in various
fields of environmental protection. The main goals of Ecoil-Ruzgar are to:
carry out public monitoring of the ecological situation in Azerbaijan;
organize civic activities to protect and improve the environment; and to
promote ecological education among citizens.
Ecoil-Ruzgar works to:
* Catalog toxic emissions and substances used in industry
* Prepare standards for air pollution levels from factories
* Study radiation levels
* Develop recommendations to reduce industrial pollution
* Improve public understanding of environmental matters
* Organize conferences, seminars and meeting on environmental topics
* Publish articles, brochures, etc. on environmental protection
* Participate in the drafting of laws related to the environment
Ecoil-Ruzgar is composed of sub-sections which work on:
* Protection of air and water
* Environmental problems of oil-industry
* Radiation security
* Civil Ecological education
* Protection of wilderness
* Environmental policy and law
* Independent monitoring laboratory
* Environment Research Centre at the Azerbaijan University
* Publishing and Public Affairs
Before it's merger with Ecoil, Ruzgar had received three grants from the
ISAR office in Baku to:
* Study and organize a conference on the topic of the effect of the oil
industry on air pollution in Baku (September 1996);
* Publish a handbook on "Labour Market Potential in Azerbaijan;"
* Publish a report on the environmental and social aspects of the
development of the petroleum industry in Azerbaijan,
With support from the World Bank, Ruzgar also organized a workshop on the
environmental impact of oil pipelines July 1997 in Baku.
