                       Program Assistant
                Central Asian Region (CAR) Focus

Counterpart International is looking for a program assistant to work on its
NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) Support Initiative in Central Asia.
This program works to foster the creation of effective, democratic and
sustainable NGOs capable of expressing citizens' interests, providing
services to vulnerable groups within the population, and working in sectors
critical to the economic, political and social development of the region.
Counterpart accomplishes these goals by a) providing training to NGOs in a
variety of issues; b) implementing a small grants program; and c) promoting
and facilitating information exchange among local NGOs and with
international organizations.

The program assistant will be based in Washington D.C. The program
assistant's duties will include:

* backstopping Central Asian NGO support programs
* researching and identifying American NGOs to partner CAR NGOs
* contact and follow-up with American/Central Asian organizations
* assistance with proposal writing/budgeting
* providing general office support and administrative assistance
* providing logistical support to Central Asian offices
* writing reports

Requirements for the position include:

* willingness to perform administrative work
* completion of undergraduate degree
* an interest in international development
* an interest in the former Soviet Union
* familiarity with WordPerfect or MS Word, and good IBM/Windows 95
computer skills
* good writing skills, writing sample required
* the ability to juggle many tasks while maintaining good humor

The ideal candidate would also have:

* knowledge of Russian or a Central Asian or Turkic language
* extensive knowledge about (or have visited) the former Soviet Union
or Central Asia
* experience working in a non-profit

This position offers the opportunity to gain substantive experience with
development work in the former Soviet Union and to learn about other
international development organizations operating in Central Asia. Please
