WHAT: A Professional - in - Residence position on Samara State
University's (SSU) Law Faculty
WHEN: Winter Semester - March 15 - June 30 (professor would want to
arrive a little early in order to settle into his/her apartment,
etc.)
COURSES TO BE TAUGHT: Private International Law, Commercial Law,
International Arbitration, and Contracts (all at the introductory
level)
TEACHING REQUIREMENTS PER WEEK: 6 hours, 3 class sessions of 2 hours
each
BACKGROUND: This teaching position is sponsored by USIA in support of
the Regional Investment Initiative (RII) agreed to between the United
States and Russia in February of 1997. The partnership was developed
to encourage and support efforts already underway in the region to
improve the climate for private investment. The Samara region was
selected because of its achievements in economic reform and its
success in attracting investment. Under the auspices of the RII,
several other efforts are either already underway or being finalized
in the region including a business center, a technology incubator, an
Internet access project and university partnerships.
COMPENSATION: $100 per day honorarium; meals and incidentals allowance
per diem; monthly housing allowance to cover the cost of apartment
rental.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: SSU will find a renovated apartment near the
university for the selected professor. The grant WILL cover rent for
the apartment.
THE REGION: The University is located in Samara (the city), which is
the name of both the capital city of the region and the name of the
region. There are 1.2 million people in the city and 3.3 million
people in the region. The city is located on the banks of the Volga
River and the climate is like that of the Mid-Western U.S. - snowy in
the winter and hot in the summer. There is good public transportation
and a lively cultural atmosphere. There are many colleges in the
region and several in the city. There are also many U.S. government
programs in the region including several university partnerships.
There will, therefore, be some American exchange professors in town.
There is also a resident American in the city who is responsible for
coordinating the RII.
