Subject: Survey of Nonprofit studies in Central Eastern Europe.

Dear Collegues!

        For two years, there has been some brainstorming and consultations
about the idea of an Eastern and Central European "Third Sector
Institute". A core group of third sector leaders from our region expressed
their interest in exploring the need for, and viability of, a regional
center that could promote much needed Third Sector Studies in East and
Central Europe. Robert Payton, professor of Philanthropic Studies from
Indiana University, Indianapolis and Miklos Marschall former executive
director of CIVICUS have volunteered as co-chairs to coordinate the
exploratory efforts.

        To better understand the current situation in our countries, we
are carrying out a survey in order to establish a database of existing
university level nonprofit studies and programs in the region of Central
and Eastern Europe which includes: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia.

        According to our definition ,university or college level third
sector study is an incorporated (regular) course which is part of the
curriculum offered by the university or college. (in other words, we do
not include short-term seminars, conferences, or occasional training
nrograms, lectures). Third Sector Studies are broadly defined:
nonprofit-, philanthropic-, social economy-, civil society-,civic studies/
courses are included.

        By the end of the survey, we would like to have a general overview
of the state of courses, problems, needs, etc. of nonprofit studies at
universities and colleges in the region, and a reliable network of experts
with whom the next phases of the project could be discussed.

Deadline for the survey: December 5 1998.

        As you are involved in nonprofit issues we would very much
appreciate it if you could help us with any of the following:

--- Providing contact names and/or institutions, universities,
colleges (adresses, phone/fax numbers, e-mail accounts) in your country
from whom we could get reliable information on existing university/college
level third sector studies;

--- Providing contact names and/or institutions, universities,
colleges (adresses, phone/fax numbers, e-mail accounts) in any of the
following countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine,
Yugoslavia from whom we could get reliable information on existing
university/college level third sector studies;

--- In case you know a third sector course in any of these countries in
detail, we would be more than grateful if you would completing our short
survey-questionnaire which we would send after having received your
response to this e-mail;

--- Providing information on already existing surveys on
this particular issue.

        If you are interested in our TSI project or you could provide
reliable contact names for further research or you could provide
information on already existing surveys concerning this issue, please
respond as soon as possible to this e-mail by sending an e-mail to:

        [email protected]

Thank you very much in advance

Sincerely,

Mikls Krlik
