Canadian volunteers needed for

CIVIL SOCIETY COMMUNITY ROOTS PROJECT - UKRAINE
(July, 1998 � June, 2002)

Canadian Volunteer Cooperants for Community Development Program

Introduction

The Civil Society Community Roots (CSCR) Project is a four-year
technical co-operation project in Ukraine being managed by the
Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). One major
component of this innovative project is a Community Development
Program. This component will work with Ukrainian non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs) to
provide support to three community development demonstration sites
in different areas of Ukraine. The major Canadian partners
assisting CBIE in implementing the Community Development Program
are the University of Calgary and the Four Worlds Centre for
Developmental Learning. CBIE is actively seeking Canadian long-
term volunteers who would like the opportunity to contribute to
the implementation of this new and exciting initiative in a
country making the difficult transition to independence, democracy
and a market-based economy.

Job Description

The objective of the Community Development Program is to build the
capacity of regionally-based NGOs to provide facilitative
technical support to CBOs which have been created to bring
ordinary citizens together in voluntary associations to address
common critical social and economic issues.

The Canadian volunteer cooperant's main responsibilities are to
provide ongoing support to one of the three community development
demonstration sites in Ukraine. Assignments will be from 120 to
200 days in length. The Cooperant shall report to the Ukrainian
Team Leader but shall work in close co-operation with the
designation host local organisation.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Canadian volunteer cooperant are:

* provide on-going practical advice and support to community
  development demonstration sites;

* provide assistance to regional field coordinators, who are local
  Ukrainians;

* conduct monthly local learning circles (about ten per year for
  each site) bringing together representatives of the
  demonstration sites and of the regionally-based NGO partner for
  peer support and mutual learning and problem-solving;

* coordinate applied research efforts in community development;

* ensure that knowledge and skills gained through training
  programs are shared with key volunteers in the demonstration
  sites;

* prepare case studies and other documentation;

* foster links between the Ukrainian partners and community
  development projects in Canada and in other countries; and

* use distance media to maintain and support connections between
  the Ukrainian partners and Canadian community development
  specialists from the University of Calgary and Four Worlds
  Centre for Development Learning.

Preferred Qualifications

* a university degree with specialisation in Community Development
  or Adult Education
* past experience in community development work
* computer literacy
* knowledge of Ukrainian and/or Russian an asset but not essential

Terms and Conditions of Service

For these volunteer positions, the following conditions and terms
of service apply:

You will receive a living allowance of up to CAD $35 for each day
in Ukraine under local living conditions. This is enough to live
comfortably.

You will also receive a pre-departure briefing to prepare you for
your assignment, return air transportation by most direct and
economical route, health and medical insurance and the cost of
immunizations.

To support you in your work in Ukraine, the Project provides
operational including travel, communications, interpretation and
translation, office equipment, materials and supplies. The
Project also provides support through an office based in Kyiv and
a local regional field coordinator, who is bilingual Ukrainian-
English and who will work with you.
