The Board of Trustees, Steering Committee, Directors, Management and Staff
of both Civitas Nigeria and the Centre for Responsive Politics, Nigeria,
send our condolences to the government and people of the United States of
America on the tragedy of terrorists attacks of Tuesday 11th September 2001.
We share with you the grief and sorrow of this mindless act of international
terrorism. Our hearts go out to the families of victims of the hijacks, the
World Trade Centre and Pentagon crash, and the police officers, firefighters
and volunteers who have been maimed or lost their lives in this incident.
We condemn this act of terrorism and hope that the sponsors of this horrible
show of shame and uncivilized conduct would be brought to justice in no
distant time. We hold that no amount of conflict or grievance warrants the
sought of destruction of property and lives as we have witnessed.
While we condole with the families, we must say that this incident has once
more brought home the realities of international terrorism. For too long we
have regarded terrorism as a distant thing. The truth is that international
terrorism threatens global peace, foreign and domestic security of our
respective countries. This is the time for a renewed global action against
terrorists and terrorism.
As we all grapple with the consequences of the evil that has befallen world
civilization, we implore the people and government of the United States to
continue to safeguard civil liberties and freedom both for Americans and
millions of foreigners who come to America.
America be strong. We in Nigeria STAND BY YOU.
