The center is a "friend of park" organization that works closely with Prebaikalsky National Park. The Park is one is six protected areas adjacent to Lake Baikal. 

Park employees, including American Hank Birmbaum, have worked to upgrade the tourist services of the park. With assistance from the U.S.-based organization, Ecologically Sustainable Development, and a grant from USAID, they are working to improve the park and establish it as the base for the area's economy.
