Native People
Non-governmental
- Association of Indigenous People of Primorskii Region (Udege Society)
- A loosely organized regional association of the main groups of Native people, including Udege, Orochi, and Nanai people. The Society received funding from the Office of Oceans, Environment and Science, U.S. Department of State, to assist in planning future development of the Bikin River area.
- Association of Indigenous People of Primorskii Region (Udege Association)
- The Association has identified several priority issues. These include: 1.) Preserving the Bikin watershed -- the land must be held intact to keep their people intact; 2.) Finding alternative energy sources -- at present, Krasny Yar has power for only four hours per day; 3.) Beginning small demonstration projects which will produce results and restore faith in their own abilities; 4.) Creating a national park and its related activities. This private association of Native people plans to own the state forest company, GPK. If this happens, the Udege Association could organize sales, trade, mills, transportation, management, training, etc. in forestry. This economic venture could also oversee hunting, fur enterprises, wildlife management, and the harvesting and marketing of non-timber forest products.
