The Community Connections Program is funded by the United States Information Agency (USIA) and began in spring of 1994 as the "Business for Russia" program. In 1994, it sponsored 270 internships for Russians in 11 US cities. By the end of October 1998, the program will have been responsible for bringing nearly 4,000 representatives of the business and professional (including legal and governmental) sectors of six NIS countries to the US for internships and homestays in 39 US cities.
Programs usually range from three to five weeks and can include internships, job shadowing, seminars, and/or professional meetings. Personal interests of participants strongly determine the direction of the individual participant's experience. In some cases, English language skills are not required on the part of interns.
USIA is currently evaluating proposals from community host organizations. The agency plans to award grants beginning in June 1997 for programs in the fall. For more information, contact Michael Weider of Anthony Kluttz.
