ISLAM, DEMOCRACY AND MARKET ECONOMY: A DIALOGUE
-----------------------------------------------
November 30, 2001 (Washington, DC) - Ambassador Ozdem Sanberk's presentation
on Islamic cultural values, and democracy in a market economy is now
available in audio and text transcript on the Center for International
Private Enterprise's Web site.
Ambassador Sanberk is the director of the Istanbul-based Turkish Economic
and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV), former Ambassador to the U.K., and
undersecretary at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This discussion
was held on November 7th, in CIPE's Washington, DC office and explored why
and how democracy and market economy are the paths to development in the
Islamic world.
Dr. Laith Kubba, senior program officer for Middle East and North Africa at
the National Endowment for Democracy also contributed to the roundtable
discussion.
The discussion was intended to answer the question: Do the tenets of Islam
provide support for the basic components of a democratic society, and by
extension a market economy, or is Islam inherently incompatible with these
institutions? For 15 years, the Center for International Private
Enterprise, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a principal
participant in the National Endowment for Democracy, and its worldwide
partners have been struggling with questions like this one.
