JOB OPENING: PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Position: Program Coordinator of the Tahoe-Baikal Institute
Location: South Lake Tahoe, California, USA
Start Date: March 1, 2002
Length of Contract: 8 months, with possibility of extension
Salary: 40 hours/week, $ 8/hr. (please note that the position will turn
into an Americorps position on May 1 contact us for more details)
Requirement: Must be U.S. citizen

The Tahoe-Baikal Institute
The mission of the Tahoe-Baikal Institute (TBI) is to further environmental
and resource protection through environmental exchanges and joint
international projects that foster the long-term engagement and
participation of young people in environmental issues.
Through its program, the Institute promotes: the study and improvement of
governmental policy and policymaking on environmental issues; the
implementation of ecological restoration projects; scientific research and
education relating to the preservation of significant natural resources;
community-based environmental projects; and practical approaches to solving
environmental problems.
The main focus of TBI is a 10-week summer environmental exchange for
college-level students, graduate students, and young professionals. This
exchange takes place at Lake Tahoe, in California and Nevada, and Lake
Baikal, in Russia. The centerpiece of this program is a set of hands-on
projects in which program participants can apply their skills and gain new
knowledge. The Institute is also branching out to sponsor other types of
exchanges. Recent initiatives have included a scientific field study of
the Selenga River in Mongolia, policymaker- and board-level exchanges, and
a law exchange.
Responsibilities of the Program Coordinator include:
Before program (March July)
In cooperation with Program Director:
� Compile alumni information, write articles and edit annual newsletter.
� Organize and facilitate program committee meetings.
� Organize participant selection.
� Prepare participants for the program (travel and visa arrangements,
information packets, program introduction day).
� Plan 5-week U.S. portion of the TBI program (logistics, speakers,
homestays, other housing).
� Assist project leaders in preparing two-week project to take place
during program.
� Secure food and equipment for camping, kitchen, road-trip, projects.
� Prepare cabin for summer living.
During program (July - August)
Lead the 5-week Tahoe portion of the summer program, including:
� Oversee smooth running of program.
� Continue logistical planning (meetings, travel, last minute
arrangements).
� Prepare speakers and introduce them at formal functions.
� Prepare group for activities.
� Assure timely arrival of group to meetings.
� Facilitate and encourage discussions.
� Encourage acquaintances between program participants, alumni, board
members, and other program supporters.
� Arrange kitchen duty, chore groups, and roommate placements.
� Distribute, use, and report cash expenditures.
� Purchase food, organize meals.
� Supervise summer program staff (assistant coordinator, drivers,
chef, and interpreter).
� Take pictures during program.
� Oversee participant project reports and program evaluations.
� Stay alert to student needs, and needs of project leaders, etc.
After program (September October)
� Compile participants program evaluations and prepare a summary for
the program committee.
� Write program report.
� Send out thank-you letters to program supporters.
� Label of pictures and slides.
� Work with project leaders to finalize participant project reports.
� Organize recruiting campaign.
Candidates for the Program Coordinator position should satisfy the
following qualifications:
� Strong coordination, organizational, and time management skills.
� Computer competence in Microsoft programs (mainly Word) and e-mail
programs.
� Good writing and communication skills.
� Training/teaching experience.
� Experience with environmental education.
� Strong inter-personal skills (to facilitate among organizations,
TBI participants and staff).
� Self-motivator and innovator.
� Flexible.
� Culturally sensitive and tolerant.
� Basic knowledge of political, environmental, and social issues in
Russia and the U.S. a plus
� Knowledge of Russian language a plus.
� Experience in managing projects and budgets a plus.
� CPR, First Aid, and Lifesaving certification a plus.
