POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
AREA STUDIES AND RUSSIAN & EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES
OUTREACH COORDINATOR
The Outreach Coordinator coordinates the outreach activities and
initiatives of the KU area centers; serves as principle liaison between the
area studies centers of the University of Kansas and K-16 teachers and
educators, community, business, and government constituencies, as
appropriate; serves as principle liaison for outreach efforts conducted in
cooperation with other pertinent units, such as the Office of International
Programs, Center for International Business, and the Hall Center; in
consultation with Directors of the Area Studies Centers, coordinates
activities of the Outreach Coordinators in African, European, East Asian,
and Latin American Studies that touch on general international studies
topics; serves as Outreach Coordinator of the Center for Russian and East
European Studies

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Regular appointment subject to review and reappointment
SALARY: $28,000 - $30,000, depending on experience. 26 bi-weekly pay
periods.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:
This unclassified, professional, non-exempt position is 1.0 FTE (full
time equivalent) and includes benefits (health care, prescription,
dental; retirement plan; 12 days sick leave, 26 vacation days
annually). The Outreach Coordinator reports to the Associate Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences who serves as contact dean for the area centers.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Outreach Coordinator for Area Studies:
1. works with other area studies personnel and faculty to design,
coordinate, staff, and implement the outreach activities and initiatives
of the KU area centers (conferences, workshops, presentations, special
events and projects);
2. serves as liaison between the area studies centers and K-16 teachers
and educators and community, business, and government constituencies as
appropriate (including the Mid-America Consortium for International
Education, US/ED Area Outreach Directors, and professional organizations);
3. serves as principal liaison for collaborative outreach efforts
conducted with other KU agencies and units (including Hall Center for the
Humanities, Office of International Programs, Center for International
Business, KU Continuing Education, University Relations, and KU Connections);
4. coordinates activities of area-specific outreach personnel based in the
individual centers;
5. designs, collects materials for, and composes Tidbits, a newsletter for
K-12 teachers; maintains an outreach web site; creates new web materials;
6. creates a variety of outreach materials and participates in outreach
events as appropriate to interests and experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
! Strong interest in international cultures
! BA degree in appropriate field (world area, international,
foreign language, education, etc.)
! Excellent written and verbal communications skills
! Organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
! Strong people and teamwork skills;
! Flexibility, creativity, and learning skills
! Experience with project planning
! Willingness to travel
! Computer skills, including Windows and PC applications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
! Knowledge of Russian/East European studies
! MA or other degree in appropriate field
! Grant-writing experience
! Experience creating newsletters, advertising copy, brochures,
media releases
! Knowledge of HTML or Java, experience with web applications
! Some supervisory experience
