The Tahoe-Baikal Institute is pleased to announce its 13th Annual Summer
Environmental Exchange Program between Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada
and Lake Baikal in Siberia. Up to 20 students, graduate students, and young
professionals from the U.S., Russia, and other countries around the world
will be chosen to spend the summer learning about the natural history of
Lakes Tahoe and Baikal and about environmental initiatives in science and
policy. Participants also have the opportunity to take part in small-group
projects at both lakes that are sponsored by local agencies and non-profits
and focus on watershed management, sustainable economic development, and
cultural exchange. Sponsors of projects at Tahoe and Baikal in 2002 included
the Washoe Tribe of California and Nevada, Earth Island Institute, the
California Tahoe Conservancy, the Irkutsk Institute of Geography, and Baikal
State Biospheric Nature Preserve.
TBI looks for applicants with backgrounds in:
� Environmental Studies 	� Russian, Slavic, or Asian Studies
� Regional Planning		� Limnology
� Resource Conservation		� Ethnography
� Environmental Education	� Env. Engineering
� Environmental Policy, 	� Physical Sciences
   Political Science,
   Economics or Law
U.S. participants of the TBI program will be invited to become Americorps
volunteers and, after completing two weeks of restoration work before or
after the program, will receive a $2000 stipend and a $1750 education award.
There is a program fee of $1750 that covers all expenses during the program,
including international travel.
Program Dates: Mid-June to Late August 2003
