Subject: Re: NGOs and Chernobyl

As we approach this 10th Anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, I am
shocked and very disappointed about how little mention is made of
Belarus and more importantly how little help is given to the country
that has received over 70 percent of the fallout (with 20 percent of
the country's people and land affected). With 3 additional nuclear
power plants close to Belarus' borders in Lithuania and Russia (yet
none in Belarus), the potential for another disaster to Belarus is not
insignificant. Also note that there was a "serious radiation leak" at
Chernobyl in Nov. 1995, that was not reported until March, 1996,
(OMRI Daily Digest, number 50, March 11, 1996).

Please add to your list:

World Vision Russia/ Belarus/ Ukraine, the City Government of
Mozyr, the Independent Radiological Laboratory of Mozyr and the
Duhovnost Center of Gomel are partnering to organize a conference. On
April, 24-26 in Mozyr, Belarus - the closest inhabited city to
Chernobyl - this conference is set to draw world-wide attention to the
current problems of the people who still live in these areas. Together
with teachers, parents and community leaders, participants will be
able to discuss the ways and forms of international cooperation in
social and economic development of these regions. The conference will
provide a unique opportunity for NGOs and other humanitarian
agencies to receive feedback from people living in the contaminated
regions, and help design a new or adjusted methodology of relief &
development within the area.
