                Azerbaijan Ecology

CCSI recently received the first issue of "Green
Azerbaijan," a monthly bulletin which reports on the
environmental situation in Azerbaijan. The bulletin is
published by ECORES, an independent information
organization established in Baku in 1995.

ECORES collects and disseminates environment-related
information, publishes maps and sets up information
systems on geology and ecology, organizes conferences and
seminars, promotes the use of environmentally clean
technologies, and has established an environmental library
in Baku. It has established relationships with the
American Association for the Advancement of Science and
the American Association of Geographers. It works with a
number of international environmental NGOs, including
Sacred Earth Network and ECOLOGIA in the U.S., the Socio-
Economic Union in Russia, and the Environment Foundation
of Turkey. Financial support for "Green Azerbaijan" was
provided by ISAR.

The first issue of "Green Azerbaijan" included:

* An analytical article titled " Ecological Imperatives
of Sustainable Development of Azerbaijan" by Shahin Panah,
the head of the Department of Geography and Environmental
studies at Khazar University and founder of ECORES;

* A chronicle of environment-related events in Azerbaijan
for the last month, including: the results of government
studies, pending legislation, conferences by NGOs, fines
levied by the government against polluters, etc.

* a brief digest of select stories in the mass media
related to the environment, and

* a report on the agroclimatic resources of the Apsheron
region of Azerbaijan.
