TO EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT
HUMAN RIGHTS IN RUSSIA AND ELSEWHERE

Dear Friends:

We are writing to you on behalf of the Andrei Sakharov Archives and Human
Rights Center at Brandeis University. The Archives, which consist of
documents smuggled to the West during the late 70's and 80's, were
entrusted to Brandeis by Elena Bonner, widow of Andrei Dmitrievich. It
includes his scientific manuscripts, diaries, personal correspondence,
drafts of his "Memoirs," notes on literature, history, civilization, and
much more.

This priceless and absolutely unique collection constitutes the core of the
Sakharov Archives at Brandeis. Plans are now underway for the creation, on
the basis of the Archives, of a Center for the study of the Sakharov era
and human rights issues, so central to the philosophy of Andrei Sakharov,
as expressed in his Nobel lecture "Peace, Progress, Human Rights".

We are calling on you to help us in our efforts to support the Archives and
to create the Center by making a financial contribution. We feel that many
of you understand the role Sakharov played in the struggle for human
rights, generally, and for freedom of emigration, in particular, not to
speak of his unique and inmense contribution to the fall of the communist
totalitarian empire.

An example of how your gift may be used is the recent opportunity that has
been presented to the Archives to acquire the complete microfilm copy of
the 30-volume KGB investigation files of Sergei Kovalev's case of
1974-1975. Kovalev was one of four editors of the Chronicle of Current
Events; his files, now at the State Archives of Lithuania, are an
indispensable resource for the study of the repressive and ideological
apparatus of Soviet Regime.

This opportunity is a direct result of the demise of the USSR, which left the
KGB archives in the possession of the independent Lithuania. The cost of this
acquisition is solely the expense of microfilming the files. Your support of
the acquisition of these critically important documents would be of great help,
and you will know that you have participated in an historic effort to preserve
the legacy of those who selflessly worked for the rights of others.

Your contribution is fully tax deductible. It can be in the form of check made
payable to Brandeis University, with a note "for the Andrei Sakharov Archives".

It should be mailed to:

The Andrei Sakharov Archives
Goldfarb Library
Brandeis University
415 South Street
Waltham, MA 02254-9110

We suggest a minimum $50 contribution, but any donation will be appreciated.
You may want to consider a donation of an amount you can afford made on a
regular basis, semi-annually or annually. Please include your name and
title, if applicable, the way you want them to appear in Brandeis
University's 1996-1997 Annual Report on Giving. If you need more information,
please contact Tatiana Yankelevich at (617) 736-4717.

                With every good wish,

Robert Szulkin Tatiana Yankelevich
