Seeking Successful Business/Municipal Partnerships in CEE
*****************************************************************
The REC has been asked by the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) European Secretariat to help
identify successful cases in Central and Eastern Europe where
effective partnerships between businesses and municipalities are
taking place.
Such success stories should be better promoted and publicized on
a wide forum, and a major opportunity to do so is coming with the
International Conference "Business and Municipality" to be held
in Bremen, Germany, in March 13-15, 1997. The topic of the con-
ference is the cooperation between private enterprises and local
authorities for the benefit of local sustainable development.
Representatives of towns and cities from the CEE region are
sought who can be invited to present their experience in a Con-
ference workshop. A successful partnership is to be presented by
one person from the business side, and one person from the local
authorities side.
If you know of any such case that you can recommend, please send
us a short note, together with contact information before January
10, 1997, and if your schedule allows, even sooner. We will then
pass the info on to the Conference organizers, who will be con-
tacting them directly to discuss a possible participation in the
Conference.

Conference Information
*****************************************************************
The conference is a high-profile event coordinated by the Euro-
pean Secretariat of the International Council for Local Environ-
mental Initiatives. The conference will take place in Bremen,
Germany, between March 13 and 15, 1997, and will be attended by
highest level representatives of the major environmental players,
to include the World Business Council for Sustainable Develop-
ment, World Business Forum, UN Commission on Human Settlements,
the World Bank, the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum, to
mention just a few.
One of the objectives of the Conference is to present interest-
ing and successful cases of cooperation between businesses and
municipalities. The cooperation between business and municipali-
ties should meet the following criteria:
* reflect the true sense of partnership and mutual benefit
* be characterized by long term thinking and shared responsibil-
ity
* demonstrate some tangible results indicating a successful
outcome
* the business side should preferably be active in an important
area of economy, or cover a wide range of activities of the
private sector
* there should be two people available for the presentation of
the case study - one from the business and one from the munic-
ipal sector.
