According to Clarinews, the first shelter for stray animals was opened in
Ukraine on Monday!! Hooray! :-)
The shelter is in Pirogovo, a suburb of Kyiv, and is on the site of a
former slaughterhouse ("abattoir"). The abattoir was closed in 1994
after scenes in a film showing containers full of dead dogs killed as
strays sparked angry protests from the community
Currently there are 126 dogs and 200 cats at the shelter. Representatives
of animal protection organizations from Austria, Great Britain, Germany,
and Switzerland, who donated equipment and medical supplies, were on hand
during the inauguration ceremonies. Ukrainian authorities have set up a
free telephone line for the shelter and have pledged to build aviaries and
renovate the buildings on the site.
