The World Bank is gathering background material for a paper titled:
"Education and Social Cohesion" and would appreciate having any
references to good analytic work which discusses curriculum,
pedagogical principles, and mechanisms that were successfully
employed to achieve educational agreement across diverse
social/ethnic/religious/cultural groups.

We are especially interested in knowing about international
efforts to cooperate on developing and coordinating curriculum
principles or pedagogical materials across international borders.
Other educational efforts to build social cohesion that we would
be interested in, may include:

-- liberal policies with respect to languages of instruction.

-- the development of educational materials (textbooks,
teacher training and retraining) which may
emphasize social tolerance.

-- newly established institutions such as school boards or
education councils in which differing views on
education policy may be discussed.

-- information on initiatives which resulted from
cooperation of ministries of education in
neighboring countries.

Information from Central Asia and the Caucuses would be
particularly welcome, but we would be grateful to have
information from anywhere from the former Soviet Union, Central
Europe and Eastern Europe.

Thank you all very much.

Sincerely,

Stephen Heyneman
