        Summer Courses in the Central European University

The Summer University (SUN) of the Central European University (CEU) was
initiated in July 1996 to encourage and promote regional academic
cooperation and curriculum development by convening young faculty in
lectures, seminars, and workshops. The program offers a series of
intensive short courses in the social sciences and humanities, which are
supplemented by public lectures, optional evening Internet instruction,
and English language writing tutorials.

Eligibility and Funding

* Applications are invited from all countries.

* Participants from East Central Europe (ECE) and the former Soviet Union
(FSU), with the exception of those from Budapest, will receive a grant covering
tuition, accommodation, travel, health insurance, a book allowance, and a
stipend to cover meals and incidentals. Participants from Budapest will receive
free tuition, a book allowance, and a reduced stipend.

* Applicants from countries not in the FSU or ECE must pay $200 tuition
 per week of instruction (200 classroom hours) and for the cost of
accommodation, health insurance, travel, and meals.

* A limited number of tuition waivers are available, for which
applications are accepted on a competitive basis.

* Applicants must:

        * Have a university degree and hold a teaching job at a
     university or college in their home country, or work as an
     administrator or professional; Graduate students with teaching
     experience may also apply

        * Demonstrate a sufficient command of English to be able to
     follow lectures and participate actively in discussions at seminars
      and workshops

1. Labor Markets and the Applied Microeconomics of Transition (6-17
July)

2. Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Development in
Transition Countries (22 June-3 July)

3. Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Development: an
Advanced Workshop on Strengthening Practice in Transition Countries (13-24
July)

4. Libraries and Internet (20-31 July)

5. Science and the Institution (6-31 July)

6. Statistics for the Social Sciences (6-17 July)

The deadline for receipt of applications for participation in all courses
is 1 February 1998.
