         Case Teachers, Writers, and CEE Cases

The Innovation and Development Center (IDC) runs a special
program which focuses on strengthening the teaching and writing
of cases in the region. In cooperation with faculties from the
Case Study Program of the Kennedy School of Government, we
conduct annual summer schools on Case Teaching and Case Writing.
We are also formulating a list of people who have experience and
expertise with the case method in order to create a network of
case writers and case teachers in Central and Eastern Europe. At
the present moment the Case Teaching Method is not widespread in
the region, therefore we are attempting to compile a list of all
cases so that instructors of business and public administration
schools will have access to relevant cases. We would like to get
information from faculty with experience with the Case Method,
including descriptions of cases they are willing to share with
colleagues in the area.

Background on IDC Case Study Program

In 1997, with support from the Eurasia Foundation the Innovation
and Development Center in Kyiv, established a Case Curriculum
Exchange in Ukraine, which includes:

* "Training the Trainer" workshops and support for faculty using
  the case method of teaching;
* Research and writing of case studies on public administration,
  nonprofits, and business management issues;
* Distribution of case studies;
* Promoting the use of case studies in graduate schools and
  executive training throughout Ukraine.

In 1998 IDC organized two summer schools on "Case Teaching and
Case Writing of Public and Business Administration and Political
Science" in Odessa and Kyiv. The students were professors at
leading universities and schools of public administration in
Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, and Azerbaijan. The teaching staff
included instructors from the Kennedy School of Government at
Harvard University and the International Management Institute in
Kyiv.

IDC has published two books on the case study method: one a
translation of a book originally published by the Kennedy School;
and the other by two Ukrainian specialists. IDC has also
produced a 15 minute video titled "Why do you teach as you used
to teach."
