                        Legal Officer
   Public Interest Law Initiative in Transitional Societies

Reporting to the Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative in
Transitional Societies (PILI), the Staff Attorney will assist the Director
in implementing selected priorities of the Public Interest Law Initiative.
PILI assists the development of strong public interest law communities in
Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia through publications,
electronic resources, meetings and capacity-building programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Works closely with the Director of PILI to develop public interest law
resources. Specific tasks will include finalizing the publication of a
Public Interest Law Handbook and a report from an Experts Meeting on
Access to Justice, coordinating the preparation of a Russian language
version of the Handbook, and expanding a resource-providing website and
other electronic resources.

* Works closely with the Director of PILI to coordinate capacity-building
initiatives in the areas of clinical legal education and access to justice
(legal aid). Specific tasks will include co- organizing international
conferences, coordinating the provision of technical assistance to law
faculties in the region, and coordinating a working group of organizations
planning a region-wide campaign on Access to Justice in Central and
Eastern Europe.

* Supervises the work of student Research Fellows and Interns who
contribute to the development of PILI publications and electronic
resources.

* Maintains relationships with other institutions and individuals
concerned with public interest law in the region.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

J.D. required. Candidate must be highly motivated, with strong attention
to detail and the ability to think strategically and manage multiple
projects. Fluent written and oral English and excellent research and
writing skills are required. Field experience abroad, especially working
on human rights or legal/political development in Central and Eastern
Europe, Russia or Central Asia, is strongly preferred. Experience working
in public interest law, human rights and/or clinical legal education in a
domestic setting is desirable. Knowledge of Russian is preferred, and
knowledge of other relevant languages is desirable.
