Subject: ACTR seeking universities to host Eurasian scholars
The American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS is now
accepting applications to host fellows of the 1999-2000 Junior Faculty
Development Program (JFDP). This USIA-funded program will place scholars
from the former Soviet Union in universities across the country. We are
looking for schools interested in hosting scholars for the 1999-2000
academic year. All levels of university administration and/or faculty are
encouraged to apply, however we are most interested in working with host
universities through a central administrative contact (international
offices, visiting scholar centers, etc.).
The JFDP is intended to provide opportunities for young faculty with great
potential as scholars and instructors in their disciplines to:
* develop new courses and implement curriculum
reform at their home institutions;
* cultivate new teaching skills and techniques derived
from exposure to U.S. educational methods;
* expand the information base in their fields of study and:
* become a vehicle for on-going contacts and exchanges between their
home and U.S. host institutions.
The goal of the JFDP is to support the development of Azeri, Kazakh,
Russian and Ukrainian higher education, scholarship and democratic
society. The program places scholars and instructors from Azerbaijan,
Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine at selected higher educational institutions
in the United States, through a process of open competition, in order to
undertake professional development programs with the goal of applying
their experience to the further development of higher education,
scholarship and society in their home country. Grantees in the JFDP work
closely with an American colleague to develop their knowledge of teaching
methodologies, theoretical aspects of their field, and to create new
courses and course materials for use at their home institutions. The
program is intended to support those scholars who plan to return to their
home country in order to continue their teaching and professional
activities.
The competition is open to those who hold Azeri, Kazakh, Russian or
Ukrainian citizenship, currently teach at a higher educational institution
in their home country (with the exception of those applying in the fields
of Arts Management and Library and Archival Science), have a mastery of
English language and possess a kandidatskaia (roughly equivalent to an
American Ph.D.) or two years of teaching experience in an institution of
higher education. Applicants in the fields of Arts Management and Library
and Archival Science, need a university degree (roughly equivalent to an
American B.A./B.S.) and at least two years of work experience in that
field.
For the 1999*2000 academic year, the JFDP will support young Russian,
Ukrainian, Azeri, and Kazakh faculty who will undertake 9-month,
non-degree training programs, and 2-month summer internships. Grantees
are placed at U.S. host institutions which have facilities and faculty
appropriate for their field of study. JFDP participants receive
round-trip international air transportation, medical insurance, and
monthly maintenance stipends. Grantees may be joined after arrival by
spouse and children, but the grantee must pay for the cost of their
airfare, medical insurance and living expenses. JFDP fields for 1999-2000
are as follows:
