ABOUT IREX: IREX is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the
advancement of knowledge. Central to its mission is the empowering of
individuals and institutions to participate meaningfully in civil society.
IREX administers programs between the United States and Eastern Europe, the
New Independent States (NIS), Asia, and the Near East.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: IREX, a nonprofit in international education and
training, seeks 6 candidates for the short-term position of Technology
Consultant to be included in a proposal submission to the US State
Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The Technology
Consultants will be responsible for assessing and installing computer
equipment necessary for the ECA-funded School Connectivity Project for
Southeast Europe. The countries of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Macedonia, and Romania are targeted as participants in this
project. The School Connectivity for Southeast Europe aims to generate cross
border dialogue between students in Southeast Europe and the United States
through a network of Internet access centers located in secondary schools
throughout the 6 participating countries.
Six Technology Consultants will be based in each of the countries
participating in the project. These positions require substantive in-country
travel for the duration of the position. The length of the Technology
Consultant position will be likely be a minimum of 12 - 16 weeks. Successful
applicants will have substantial knowledge in TCP/IP networking and in
creating and maintaining local area networks (LANs). Experience in providing
basic computer literacy and Internet training is also preferred. The start
date for the Technology Consultant positions is on or about February 15,
2001.
The Technology Consultants will be responsible for:
� Assessing the technical needs of participating secondary schools in
establishing Internet access centers;
� Soliciting competitive bids from hardware vendors and Internet
Service Providers (ISPs);
� Purchasing and installing hardware and software at each Internet
center as well as securing Internet connectivity;
� Troubleshooting both on and off site network problems as they arise.
QUALIFICATIONS:
� Three-four years experience in LAN administration;
� English fluency preferred;
� Well-organized, skilled at handling multiple tasks, detail-oriented.
