IREX/WWC ANNOUNCE GRANT FOR US JUNIOR SCHOLARS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2003
CENTRAL ASIA AND ITS NEIGHBORS POLICY SYMPOSIUM
APPLICATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 2, 2002
The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), in collaboration with
the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars' Kennan Institute,
Asian Program, and Middle East Project (WWC) is pleased to announce its 2003
Regional Policy Symposium: Central Asia and Its Neighbors. The symposium,
which is being supported by the United States Department of State (Title
VIII Program), The Starr Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson Center will
bring together senior and junior scholars to discuss a variety of political,
economic, historical, and cultural topics related to the Central Asian
region.
Junior scholars will be chosen based on a national competition. Applicants
must demonstrate a commitment to continued study, research, and work on and
with the countries of the Central Asian region, as well as submit developed
and policy-driven research proposals. Grants will be awarded to
approximately 15 junior scholars.
The 2003 Central Asia and Its Neighbors Regional Policy Symposium is
scheduled to take place March 13 - 16, 2003, in the Washington, DC,
metropolitan area and will involve three days of reviews of current research
projects, roundtable discussions, and the development of policy
recommendations.
General Eligibility Requirements:
* Applicants must either be currently enrolled in an MA, MS, MBA, JD, or PhD
program, or have held a graduate degree for 10 years or less. Applicants who
hold an academic post must be pre-tenure
* Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents of the United States
* Applications will not be considered from those who have not fulfilled all
requirements for previous IREX and WWC grants
* Current IREX employees and consultants and their immediate family members
(spouses, parents, children, and siblings) are not eligible to compete in
any IREX-administered grant programs, either as individuals or as the
responsible party representing an institutional applicant
Grant Provisions:
* Round-trip airfare and/or surface transportation (provided by IREX through
its travel office) from anywhere in the United States to the symposium site
* Meals and accommodations for the duration of the symposium
