UKRAINE JOINED THE GLOBAL CLEAN UP THE WORLD CAMPAIGN
An update, November 28, 2001
The first Clean Up the World campaign in Ukraine, conducted on September =
21-23 under the name of =93Clean Ukraine =96 clean Earth=94 (Chysta =
Ukraina =96 chysta Zemla), was a great success. By the end of November, =
145 reports from local clean-ups were received and more keep coming. =
According to as yet incomplete data, in 19 districts (all major regions =
of the country) more than 70 thousand volunteers cleaned-up 1.5 thousand =
sites. Participants collected 600 tons of garbage and recyclables: 70 =
tons of wastepaper, 6 tons of glass packaging, and 5.5 tons of plastic =
packaging. The Clean Up Ukraine campaign has the support of the =
Ukrainian Ministry of Environment.
Clean Up the World is an international community-based environmental =
awareness campaign, initiated in Australia in 1989 by a sailor and =
businessman Ian Kiernan. In 1993 it went global under auspices of the =
UNEP and currently is conducted in 120 countries, every September. =
During the campaign local communities, in partnership with local =
governments and business, organise clean ups, plant trees or otherwise =
take care of their immediate environment. More information is available =
at www.cleanuptheworld.org.
Clean Up Ukraine was organised by the Association of Ukrainian Cities, =
regional branch in Lviv. The campaign drew on experience of Our Earth =
Foundation from Warsaw, the national CUW co-ordinator in Poland. Clean =
Up Poland attracts every year two million participants and has markedly =
changed the way Poles see environmental issues. Our Earth Foundation =
provided initial inspiration to Ukrainian counterparts, raised start-up =
funds, organised a study visit to Poland, and serves the campaign =
co-ordinators with advice. A series of preparatory events were conducted =
in Zhovkva, Novomoskovsk (Dnipropetrovsk district), Kalush, Nadvirna =
(Ivano-Frankivsk district), and Dnipropetrovsk. A guidebook for clean up =
organisers was published and distributed to municipalities and =
environmental organisations. A web site was set up =
(www.cleanukr.org.ua).
Financial support of the campaign has been provided by the Region in =
Transition (RITA) grants programme and the East-East Programme of Batory =
Foundation and International Renaissance Foundation. In-kind =
contributions were provided by the Association of Ukrainian Cities - =
regional branch in Lviv, Our Earth Foundation, and local sponsors.
